🎯 Three field methods, in order of reliability
- Boiling — rolling boil 1 min (3 min above 6,500 ft). Kills bacteria, viruses, protozoa. Does not remove chemicals.
- Chemical — household bleach (unscented, 6%): 2 drops/qt clear water, 4 if cloudy. Stir, wait 30 min. Faint chlorine smell = good.
- Improvised filtration — cloth + charcoal + sand layers removes sediment first, then disinfect. Filtration alone is not disinfection.
⚠ Cloudy or chemically contaminated water: filter sediment first, then boil. Bleach dosing doubles for cloudy water.

📋 General principles (not a procedure)
- Tourniquet goes above the site; multiple may be needed for a proximal limb.
- Crush injury creates massive internal bleeding and hyperkalemia risk on release.
- Hypothermia and shock kill faster than the injury — manage both.
🏥 Critical decision
Self-amputation has extremely high mortality without immediate surgical support. Exhaust rescue and signaling first.
